The Unexpected Benefits of Putting Others First

by | Jul 15, 2026 | Service

Nowadays, self-love and self-care are hot topics. Which makes putting others first seem counterintuitive. We’re often told to chase our goals, protect our time, and prioritize our own success. While those things certainly have their place, there is something powerful that happens when we intentionally look beyond ourselves and put our attention on how to best serve the people around us.

That means making a conscious effort to consider how your actions, words, and decisions have the potential to positively impact someone else’s life. Surprisingly, this mindset often improves your own life in ways you may never expect.

Shift Your Focus Beyond Yourself

If your attention is always on your own challenges, setbacks, and disappointments, life will feel like it’s just trudging along. Personal struggles are a part of life, but constantly dwelling on them can make them feel larger and heavier than they truly are.

Helping others allows for a healthy change in perspective. When you take the time to encourage a friend, support a teammate, guide someone, or just listen to someone who needs to be heard, your attention extends outside of your own situation. You’ll often find that your problems feel more manageable while you’re actively making a positive difference in someone else’s life.

Strengthen Relationships Through Service

"Here to help" is spelled out in white letters on a black letterboard.

People naturally gravitate toward those who genuinely care about them. Relationships grow stronger when individuals feel valued, supported, and appreciated. Small acts of kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness build trust over time and help you to build (and keep) great relationships!

Whether in your family, workplace, community, or friendships, a willingness to serve others often leads to relationships that are more meaningful and rewarding. Look for ways to help others succeed, earn trust through their actions, and create environments where people feel supported and encouraged.

Start a Chain Reaction of Kindness (and Keep It Going)

Acts of kindness often travel farther than we realize. Encouragement can inspire confidence. Generosity is a great motivator for others to become more generous. Compassion tends to influence people to show compassion to the next person they encounter.

The simple decision to put others first can start a chain reaction that extends well beyond a single interaction. A few encouraging words may completely change someone’s day. A helping hand may provide hope during a difficult season. Over time, these seemingly small actions can contribute to a culture of support, positivity, and connection among the people around you.

Lead a More Meaningful Life

Success is often associated with personal achievement. But can’t success also be equated to the contributions you’ve made to a larger whole? Think of all the achievements made possible by a team of people who gave one priority their full focus. Maybe those wins are more meaningful than ones made all alone.

People who consistently look for ways to help others are more likely to develop stronger relationships, a greater sense of purpose, and a deeper appreciation for life’s opportunities.

When serving others becomes a habit, the benefits extend in every direction. The people around you feel supported, relationships grow stronger, and your own life gains a greater sense of meaning. Sometimes the most rewarding path forward begins with asking a simple question: “How can I help?”

As you’re helping others improve their lives, that doesn’t mean you can’t also improve yours. Just make service a large part of your process for building yourself and your vision!
