Throughout history, libraries have held the stories of the richest historical events, literary tales, and classic texts. Today, libraries have grown to include technology centers, social services, and educational resources. With such valuable offerings, neighborhood libraries have become an integral part of communities all over the world. However, without assistance from volunteers, many of their efforts wouldn’t be possible. Here are three ways you can help your local library.
1. Join the Library Advisory Board
The library advisory board is a collective of nominated volunteers who work with the local government. It’s the advisory board’s job to help the Mayor, City Librarian, and City Council make decisions that are in the best interest of the state’s libraries. Members assist the community by creating plans, policies, and rules for the upkeep of library property and materials. Representatives serve limited terms and attend regular meetings where library matters are discussed, then passed along to the state’s higher offices.
2. Volunteer
Libraries have a ton of volunteer opportunities. Additionally, many libraries offer perks (ex: discounted book sales, absolved fines, etc.) for your service. If you love literature and want to make a difference in your community, volunteering may be the perfect fit for you. Here are a few examples of library volunteer positions:
- Book Sorting and Sales
- Summer Reading Program
- Help Desk
- Cafe Services
- Help with Special Events
3. Donate
Libraries accept various types of donations. If you have movies, audio recordings, books or magazines that are in good condition, your local library would be happy to receive them. Your donations will either make their way to the library shelves or join the inventory to be sold in their bookstore. You can also contribute monetary donations that will be used to sustain library programs and services.
Libraries are invaluable. But they rely on citizens of the community for support. With your assistance, your local library can continue to thrive. Take some time to visit your favorite location and ask how you can help.
