Five Free Ways to Brighten Your Day

by | Dec 20, 2023 | Self Development

Life is hard, and it can be easy to dig yourself into a rut of just going through the motions. Add in gloomy weather, an especially tantrum-prone two-year-old, or getting reprimanded at work—and your day may quickly descend from bad to worse. But an expensive gadget or pricey new outfit is not the answer. These simple, free fixes can brighten your day.

1. Change your background.

Every day, we’re continuously turning on electronics. We open our laptop, we check our phone, we turn on our tablet. Think about what image you’re seeing as you fire up your devices. Is it a standardized default image? Or something you’ve customized and curated just for you? Take a moment to add some pizazz and inspiration throughout your day by updating your background images. You could include your “why” such as a family portrait, a picture of your dream house, or an image from your ideal vacation destination. Pick something that makes you smile, like the sun streaming down on a beautiful field of sunflowers 🌻. Or your droopy-eared puppy 🐶. This simple step can have a big impact on your day. 2. Go for a walk.

Adding movement into your day is a must. And walking outside is doubly beneficial because you get to enjoy nature, too! Consider bringing a ready-made smoothie for lunch or something else that’s quick and portable, so you can use your break to move your body. If you have a dog, let them in on the exercise, too (or ask a neighbor if you can help with their four-legged friend). Are your kids getting antsy inside? Invite the whole family on a “bear hunt” as you look carefully for tracks and clues. If it gets dark early where you live, bring a few flashlights with you and have fun looking for owl eyes and other hidden creatures.

3. Do something you’ve been meaning to do.

Stop thinking about doing it and make it a priority! Whether your “it” is organizing your bathroom, exploring a nearby museum, or calling an old friend—now is the time to take action. You’ll likely learn something new and reconnect with someone in the process. A win-win. And that will brighten your day! Keep the momentum going and continue marking items off your wish-to-do list. Who knows, you might even feel inspired to clean the whole house.

4. Curate a happy day playlist.

Listening to upbeat music will bring energy and positivity to your day. Go from sad to glad by simply switching up your song choice. Take advantage of one of the free music streaming apps out there, like Spotify™, and edit your favorite songs into a go-to playlist that you can pop on when you need to bring a little brightness to your mood. 5. Surprise yourself.

Find something new or unexpected to try! Never thought you could do your own French braid? Watch a YouTube™ video and master this skill. Have you always been too intimidated to make deviled eggs? Call your mom up and have her send you a picture of your favorite childhood recipe. Then, buy the ingredients, heat up your water, and set a timer to create the perfect boiled eggs. Before you know it, you’ll be able to enjoy a delicious hors d’oeuvre you never thought of tackling on your own. What will you try next? Keep the good energy going! Invite a friend over to enjoy your new home-cooked creations and show off your fresh up-do. The mood-boosting momentum will likely carry into other aspects of your life, too!

Turn on the light.

With these five simple ideas in mind, we hope you’ll be able to infuse energy and interest into any drab day. Keep in mind that it’s up to you to change your perspective, and it doesn’t require spending a ton of money or investing a lot of time. Just like turning the light on in a dark room, it takes mere moments to flip the switch and brighten a dark day.
